HBCUx is a national team comprised of HBCU theatre arts graduates dedicated to the uplift of Black creators and the preservation of our existence in creative spaces.

HBCUx is a manifestation of our individual journeys from attending and graduation from HBCU programs to our professional careers in the arts, entertainment and creative fields.

    Erin Washington

    CO-FOUNDER, DEVELOPMENT

    Erin is an Artist, Scholar, and Waymaker from Montgomery, AL. She attended Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and obtained her MFA in Acting from San Francisco’s award-winning, American Conservatory Theater. In 2009, Erin started Soul Productions, a company that exposes urban communities to emerging independent artists who are pioneering new approaches to music and theatre.

    Toran X. Moore

    COFOUNDER, PROGRAMS

    Toran is a multidisciplinary artist from Montgomery, AL. Based in Los Angeles, this southern native is the Programs Manager at the International Association of Blacks in Dance. Moore has worked at theatres across the U.S. including the Los Angeles Theatre Center, The Blazer Theatre of Atlanta, the Walt E. Disney Modular Theater, and many others. Moore holds an M.F.A from California Institute of the Arts and B.A. from Alabama State University.

  • Nijeul X. Porter

    CO-FOUNDER, SUSTAINABILITY

    Nijeul X, is a producer and cultural organizer with the wholehearted belief that art is always at the tipping point for change. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Management from California Institute of the Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from Howard University. Nijeul loves Black people, and is on a pursuit to fight for the collective liberation of our communities. @nijeulx

  • Lakisha May

    CO-FOUNDER, PARTNERSHIPS

    Lakisha is a storyteller and an advocate. Lakisha is crafting a life that fulfills her as an artist and a citizen of this broken country. Lakisha’s on screen credits include Boardwalk Empire, Law and Order: SVU, and others. Lakisha has originated many roles off-Broadway and at various regional theaters throughout the country. As a facilitator and teaching artist, Lakisha enjoys providing arts programming to young people and facilitating team-building workshops at universities throughout the US and Canada. As a producer, her work has screened at numerous festivals and she is working to secure resources for creators of color. Her advocacy includes work with various food justice organizations and disabled actors in the arts. Constantly fine tuning her instrument, she is excited to be sharing and exploring the somatic intelligence that lies beneath our rational thought. Lakisha has her MFA in acting from The American Conservatory Theater and her BA from Spelman College.

  • Aaliyah Simms

    CO-FOUNDER, OPERATIONS

    Aaliyah is a creative being from Suffolk, Virginia. She is a 2020 Theater and Performance graduate of Spelman College, an alum of SoulCenter’s 2019/2020 Fellowship, and a 2020/2021 Acting Apprentice alum of Actors Theatre of Louisville. Her artistry consists of being both behind and in front of the scenes. Her work behind the scenes includes: public relations, community engagement, marketing, turning paper files into digital files (novels, scripts, etc.), theatre writing, and film writing. When it comes to her work in front of the scenes and where her heart truly belongs, she is a theatre and film actress. She is in love with work that challenges her own perspective and/or other people's perspectives on the construction of life. Moving onward, Aaliyah looks forward to connecting and collaborating with creatives that create work essential to the hearts, minds, and souls of the people.
